Changes to this year’s Group Rides

You talked.. we listened!

After last years events we asked everyone “how could be make it better”… so this year we are going to try a few new things!

Group Separation

You wanted different groups… so we have decided to break group rides into 3 distinct group types that are based on vehicle types and driver experience .  Each group type will depart at separate times and be led by volunteer Ride leaders.   By breaking everyone into smaller “skill based” groups, we will help make it easier for everyone to stay together (or not… depending on the group type), and solve the “crowding” at comfort, souvenir and lunch stops!

In order for everyone to “enjoy the ride” we ask that you classify yourself properly, take the test below, or skip the test and view the groups.

Designated Leaders

Ride Leaders
Group’s Ride Leaders will be established and published in advance each day so that you can ride with the group and leader you are most comfortable with… Each Ride Leader has a different style and pace.  They will also be clearly marked/identified at all times so that you can ask questions, or make suggestions.

Tail Gunners
We had some success in the past with this, now some groups will have designated “Tail Gunners”… these riders are there to help communicate to the leader when a group has become separated by a light, or someone has a problem.  All tail gunners will have radio communication to the ride leader and if the group gets severely separated, can step up and lead the remaining group members. They will also be clearly marked/identified at all times so that you can ask questions, or make suggestions.

Common Radio Communications

Some of the Groups will have common radio communications, be sure to check with your ride leader to find out what that group supports.  Normally this will be either Cardo PackTalk, Midland GRMS Two Way Radios, or Sena.

We want to make an effort to support as much safe communication during the ride as possible.  Look for an upcoming post regarding common communications and types.

Routes

All Routes will be pre-planned and will be published BEFORE the ride in one of two formats (Google Maps, and/or Rever).  The goal is that every group takes the same routes, but we may be splitting the groups up a bit differently this year so that we can maximize our ride time and spend less time waiting around.  One group may run the route clockwise, while the next group to depart may take it counterclockwise.
